Key Outcomes

  • Unite key stakeholders behind an inspiring and purposeful vision underpinned by clear values and beliefs;
  • Lead the evolution and implementation of FFA’s National Technical Vision and Strategy to provide coherency across the business and across the whole game, encompassing all areas – the National Football Curriculum, Pathways, Competitions, National Teams, Coach Development, Participation;
  • Contribute to and influence FFA’s overall direction through effective working relationships with other Senior Managers, the CEO, and Board of Directors

Key Areas of Responsibility

1. Lead Australia’s Football Vision – In partnership with the Technical Department, National Teams and key stakeholders:

  • Evolve and implement the National Technical Vision and Strategy;
  • Develop broad terms of reference for the review of elite youth development – looking at areas ranging from the ongoing integration of ‘best-practice principles’ of player development and resourcing requirements for elite national teams;
  • Utilise communication methods to help staff, the board, and stakeholders to connect to the vision.

2. Influence Participation

  • Influence the technical aspects of participation by working with the General Managers of Participation and Coach Development to ensure growth with a positive developmental experience for all participants.

3. Lead Elite Youth Football / Pathways to National Teams

  • Lead the structure of elite youth leagues (NPL, NYL etc);
  • Work with Club Academies and Member Federation programs to meet best-practice principles;
  • Work with Club Academies, Member Federations and the PFA to ensure the embedding of holistic personal development within elite pathways;
  • Ensure high quality environments across national programs (e.g. High Performance Football Schools, Talent Support Programs etc);
  • Work with the Head Coaches of the Matildas and Socceroos to oversee the alignment between the Youth National Teams programs, Senior National Teams and the National Technical Strategy;
  • Work with National Teams Unit on the appointment of coaches for National Youth Teams;
  • Develop a consistent tool for talent identification and performance data collection across the country.

4. Coach Development

  • Work with the General Manager of Coaching to finalise the Coach Development Framework and oversee its implementation and ongoing improvement by the Coaching Unit.

5. Research

  • Lead the technical team in ongoing research to provide guidance to the technical strategy;
  • Measure and monitor impact of the technical strategy through reviews and other methods;
  • Drive greater industry understanding of different physiological, psychological and performance dynamics and needs across various cohorts of players.

6. External Involvement

  • In conjunction with National Teams Unit, identify key staff to support National Teams at AFC and FIFA tournaments and events;
  • Develop a global network to identify international trends and credibly advocate for Australian players on the global stage.

7. National Teams – In partnership with Head of National Teams and relevant stakeholders:

  • Work with all National Team coaches to drive technical alignment, performance alignment and cultural alignment across Australia’s many National Teams;
  • Work with all National Team coaches to develop objective benchmarks and clear accountabilities for the technical development, performance and culture of our National Teams;
  • Responsible for providing technical analysis reports on the progress of our National Teams to Senior Management and the Board.

Knowledge, skills and behavior required

  • Strong leadership qualities including strategic and networking skills;
  • Ability to build positive relationships and unite the football community;
  • Thorough understanding of the Australian context;
  • Experience coaching or managing staff in high-performance environments;
  • Values and beliefs consistent with the overall philosophy of the National Football Curriculum;
  • Knowledge and experience in the design and implementation of modern player / coach development programs and strategies;
  • Respected in the football community, bringing credibility and knowledge to the role for the male and female game.
