In this role, you will be reporting to the General Manager Membership and Community and be responsible for implementation of the overall strategic development and growth of SLSA surf sports to meet SLSA whole of sport strategic priorities.

A key responsibility will be the delivery of recommendations from the Sport and Recreation Review intended to improve the capabilities of our patrolling members by driving growth in participation in surf sports. Previous sport managers for SLSA have gone on to become leaders within the NSO sector, including appointments as CEOs of both State and National Sporting Organisations.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

Funding, Planning and Reporting

  • Provide input into the development of SLSA participation and high-performance strategic plans and annual surf sport operational plans.
  • Oversee the implementation of SLSA participation and high-performance strategic plans and annual surf sport operational plans.
  • Prepare and manage annual budgets in accordance with SLSA strategic priorities and annual plans.

Leadership and Management

  • Provide leadership, direction and coordinate the day to day management of the sports department.
  • Provide management support to the Sports Advisory Committee and the various working groups, including consultation with other SLSA National Advisory Committees.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement, including a commitment to quality, customer service and ongoing development.
  • Conduct performance management processes for all direct reports and oversee all performance management requirements for the business unit.
  • Ensure strategic and operational integration with other areas of the Membership and Community Portfolio (Coastal Safety and Development).

Surf Sports, Events, High Performance and Sport Development

  • Oversight of the planning and delivery of all National Sporting Events.
  • Collaborate, consult and liaise with states and territory SLS entities, all levels of government, industry and interest groups to promote and develop agreed SLSA sport plans.
  • Work closely with the Communication and Partnerships portfolio to assist in the development and management of national commercial partnerships/sponsorships which are relevant to surf sport events and programs.
  • Guide the development and delivery of support resources and programs for SLSA’s coaching and officials.
  • Develop and implement sustainable programs and activities which increase sports participation.
  • Facilitate and coordinate SLSA representation on working groups related to surf sports.
  • Develop and implement policies, protocols, operating procedures, standards and systems for surf sports.
  • Facilitate the collection, analysis and interpretation of data from relevant entities to inform evidence-based decision making, particularly to assist in the identification and management of risk in national sport events and the use of sport equipment, to maximise member safety.
  • Implementation and continuous improvement of SLSA’s scalable modified sport products.
  • Manage, liaise and coordinate SLS member enquiries directly or via the surf sports department.


  • Promote and represent SLSA to external stakeholders including government, social and cultural organisations, national sporting organisations (NSO) and the sports industry.

Experience and Knowledge required (selection criteria)


  • Tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent relevant experience in the areas of general business, management, event management or sports administration are desirable
  • Graduate qualifications in business, operations or a related field are also desirable

2. Knowledge and experience.

  • Experience in management and coordination of a team at a similar level.
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets, project expenditure and delivering organisational outcomes.
  • Experience in negotiating, sourcing and acquitting funding from external organisations including government, sport and education.
  • Experience in a National Sporting Organisation is highly desirable
  • High level of competence in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience and knowledge of surf sports and surf lifesaving.

3. Skills and Attributes

  • Demonstrated experience in developing operational business plans, providing input into strategic plans and manage overseeing the implementation to achieve the desired objectives of the business.

  • Ability to cultivate productive working relationships, facilitate and develop partnerships, value diversity and develop people.
  • Ability to influence through leadership, written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in preparing and writing reports and papers for Boards and Committees.
  • Ability to show initiative, prioritise competing work demands and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to demonstrate understanding of surf lifesaving sports unique positioning as a sport within the wider surf lifesaving movement.

This is a full-time position, working 38 hours per week and is based at Surf House @ Icebergs Bondi Beach.
