The Team Leader, Sport is responsible for leading and coordinating a suite of QUT’s sporting activities including program and partner design, implementation and execution of collaborative community engagements, workforce planning, budgeting, staff and student engagement strategies, reporting, data/information management, risk assessment, and stakeholder management.

Working closely with the Sport Operations Coordinator and supervising a team of Officers and Casuals, the Team Leader will be responsible for implementation of strategic initiatives, ensuring sound operational planning and delivery to engage and support a range of stakeholders across all sporting engagement portfolios, housing virtual and esports, representative, social, recreational, and campus, ensuring a unified delivery in partnership with community sporting organisations.

This role includes physical and functional tasks that requires the incumbent to be able to frequently manage and transport sporting equipment, regularly travel to partner organisations to facilitate engagement, whilst working across campuses where sporting facilities are located.

This position reports to the Sport Operations Coordinator for supervision, career planning, development and performance expectations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and manage the team running QUT’s diverse sporting programs. Providing supervision, guidance and support to operational staff within the portfolio.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and work collaboratively with key stakeholders across Student Engagement, faculties, schools, administrative divisions, marketing and communication, and external partners to deliver high quality sporting programs.
  • In conjunction with the Business Manager, Sport and Sport Operations Coordinator, contribute to the management of the overall budget for the operation of virtual, esport, social, recreational, representative and campus-based sporting activities.
  • Lead the recruitment and training for casual sport staff dedicated to social, recreational and campus sport programs, and staff.
  • In conjunction with the Marketing and Promotions Officer and Sports Operations Coordinator coordinate communication and develop and implement effective promotional and communication strategies for adoption across relevant platforms.
  • Lead continuous improvement activities and work collaboratively with stakeholders to achieve improvement of processes and outcomes, ensuring systems, budgets and process efficiencies are identified and maintained.
  • Ensure well documented reporting measures are in place to assist sport program reviews and evaluation and utilise systems to support the collation of data.
  • Compliance with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.

Essential Requirements

  • Education, training and/or experience equivalent to the completion of a degree with at least four (4) years’ subsequent relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience in operational leadership including the ability to conceptualise, develop and implement services, events and programs to support the strategic direction and aspirations of QUT’s sporting strategy
  • Proven ability to contribute to financial planning and distribution of project budgets to meet financial targets and KPIs for sustainable program operations
  • Highly developed communication and leadership skills to lead a team in the daily operational management of QUT’s representative, social, recreational, campus and esport programs
  • Demonstrated ability to display initiative, critically evaluate systems and processes, and implement improvements at a strategic and operational level
  • Well-developed interpersonal and digital literacy skills with demonstrated ability to negotiate with varied groups including students, staff and industry stakeholders
  • High level ability to autonomously manage time and tasks effectively and meet a range of competing deadlines in a timely manner at a high standard
