Australian Athletics (AA) is the governing body for Athletics in this country. It is a National Sporting Organisation whose major partner is the Australian Sports Commission. AA is responsible for all athletics activity, including high performance, participation, coaching, officiating, juniors, para-athletics, domestic and international competition. Athletics Australia has a critical role in leading, fostering and encouraging participation in athletics in Australia and promoting excellence in performance.
Heading towards the 2032 Brisbane Olympics & Paralympics, it is an exciting time to join our High Performance (HP) Team, we are currently seeking to recruit a Chief Medical Officer (0.3 FTE).
About the Role
Australian Athletics is seeking a highly experienced Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to oversee and coordinate the delivery of world-class medical services within Athletics nationally. Reporting to the Performance Support Manager, the CMO will play a critical role in optimising athlete performance, supporting injury prevention, and ensuring athlete wellbeing.
Your core duties will include:
- Lead and coordinate the National Instiute Network (NIN) medical practitioners, ensuring elite-level medical care for National Athlete Support Scheme (NASS) athletes, implementing injury and illness prevention strategies.
- Facilitate medical planning and support for athletes to optimise physical and mental health.
- Ensure compliance with AIS SSSM Best Practice principles and National Integrity Framework policies.
- Drive medical research, innovation, and education within the high-performance system.
- Support National team medical services for the 2025-2028 Benchmark events (through to LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games) inclusive of staging camp and hub locations.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders, inlcuding AOC, Paralympics Australian, and Commonwealth Games Australia, to enhance medical services for major events.
What we are looking for:
You are a highly experience sports medicine professional with strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of elite performance environments. You are a great communicator who can build trusted relationships with athletes, coaches, and medical professionals while driving innovation and best-practices in medical care.
Ideally you will have:
- Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent
- Post Graduate qualifications in Sport & Exercise Medicine
- Current AHPRA registration as a Medical Practitioner
- Registered Fellow with ACSEP
- A minimum of 5 years' experience delivering performance medical services to sports programs
- Evidence of success in supporting the performance of athletes and their coaches
- A keen commitment to clean sport and abiding by AA's National Integrity Framework suite of policies including the Australian National Anti-doping Policy, Safeguarding Children and Young Persons Policy and Code of Conduct.
- Hold and maintain a valid Working with Children Check and (or ability to hold) Police Check.
