Surfing NSW, established in 1963, is the governing body for surfing in New South Wales. As a not-for-profit organization, Surfing NSW exists to support and develop grassroots surfing, ensuring a seamless and fulfilling participation pathway for surfers of all ages and skill levels.
With a focus on community, programs, events, and partnerships, Surfing NSW delivers a broad range of competitions, development initiatives, and club-based surfing opportunities.
About the Role
The Events & Competitions Manager will lead the planning, coordination, and execution of Surfing NSW’s suite of owned and contracted competition events, including;
- Junior Pathway events.
- Boardrider club series & interclub events
- State Titles across multiple disciplines (Shortboard, Longboard, SUP, Bodyboard)
- Specialist community-driven and pathway competitions
- SNSW Contracted event deliverables.
This role requires event management expertise, strong operational skills, and a strong understanding of the surfing ecosystem. The ideal candidate will be able to manage key stakeholders, lead and work alongside a dedicated casual workforce, ensure competition integrity, and drive participation at a grassroots level while working within budget and strategic objectives.
This role involves significant weekend work and travel throughout NSW and will suit an individual with strong leadership, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills, accompanied by a hands-on approach.
Key Responsibilities
Event Planning & Delivery
- Lead the operational planning, execution, and wrap-up of Surfing NSW’s competition & events calendar.
- Develop and oversee competition formats, contest draws, judging & scoring systems.
- Manage Council and Government event permit applications.
- Oversee risk assessments, safety & crowd management plans, and compliance with Surfing NSW policies.
- Activate brand partners and sponsors with support from the marketing and partnerships team.
- Coordinate event staffing, volunteers, and contest officials.
- Manage event logistics, including travel, accommodation, equipment, and site setup.
Stakeholder & Club Engagement
- Serve as the primary point of contact for Boardrider clubs, athletes, officials, and event stakeholders.
- Work closely with local councils, sponsors, Surfing Australia, and community organisations to ensure seamless event execution.
- Foster strong relationships with regional surf clubs and augment SNSW’s suite of events to increase participation.
Financial & Sponsorship Management
- Develop and work within event budgets, ensuring cost efficiency and financial sustainability.
- Assist in sponsorship fulfillment for key competition pathway events, ensuring brand deliverables are met.
- Identify and apply for event-specific grants and funding opportunities.
Operations & Compliance
- Ensure Surfing NSW events comply with risk management, insurance, OH&S, and competition rules.
- Work with Surfing NSW leadership to evaluate event success and refine competition pathways.
- Maintain and oversee event equipment and asset management.
About You
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Event management experience (preferably in sport, community events, or competition-based programs).
- Strong understanding of surfing competition structures, judging formats, and pathways.
- Ability to manage multiple events, deadlines, and stakeholder relationships simultaneously.
- Strong budgeting and financial management skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office & event management software (e.g., LiveHeats).
- Excellent communication skills - capable of simultaneously managing athletes, volunteers, officials, and stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in a fast-paced event environment.
- Experience delivering events within aquatic environments.
Desirable:
- Experience or passion for delivering quality surfing events.
- Experience working within national or state sporting organisations or grassroots event organisations.
- Knowledge of risk management, safety planning, and event logistics.
- A background in surf coaching, officiating, or surf industry operations.
- Surfing Australia judging or coaching accreditation.
- Experience in marketing and partnership strategies within the events industry.
Other Requirements:
- Full driver's license.
- Availability for weekend travel and extended event days.
- NSW Working with Children Check.
