We are currently seeking a permanent part-time Head Hockey Coach to work an average of 30 hours per week in a term-time only role. It is anticipated that during the field hockey season (Terms 2 & 3) we would require a slightly larger commitment and during the indoor hockey season (Term 1 & 4) there would be a slightly smaller commitment.  

The position will have the responsibility for developing an innovative and engaging Hockey program. This includes Indoor Hockey over the Summer Season and Field Hockey over the Winter Season, which focuses on maximising the positive effects of school sports involvement for our students. As the Head Hockey Coach you will lead the development of staff and students, to drive Ascham Hockey to the next level. You will also ensure that every team in the school is well supported regardless of ability or age, in a safe and friendly environment and one that fosters and encourages both excellence and good sportsmanship amongst participants.

What You Need to Do to Succeed 

  • Develop and drive an overarching vision for Hockey that aligns with the School’s vision and values 
  • Provide hockey leadership to players from beginner to representative levels and across Junior and Senior Schools 
  • Introduce effective hockey programs to support successful academic development and sporting excellence 
  • Implement an appropriate trial period focused on developing and allocating hockey players to teams  
  • Liaise with Ascham’s Head of Sport, Sports Administration team and other stakeholders on the School’s Hockey program including strategic priorities, program administration, scheduling and student wellbeing 
  • Recruit, lead and mentor a hockey coaching team  
  • Schedule, plan and oversee all hockey development opportunities including competitions, training and matches 
  • Organise, program and attend key hockey events such as Trials, Matches and Emerging Athlete Camp 
  • Maintain and purchase equipment in consultation with the Head of Sport.  
  • Complete weekly program administration tasks such as roll marking, student feedback and student awards  
  • Attend Saturday and mid-week fixtures to coach teams and/or oversee continuing development opportunities of the Hockey coaching team 
  • Actively participate in weekly Sports Department meetings to help set and deliver on strategic priorities within sport 
  • Actively participate in end of season reviews to evaluate the effectiveness of the Hockey program and provide recommendations for future development. 

What You Bring 

  • A Development Level Coaching Qualification in Hockey (or willingness to obtain this qualification) 
  • Demonstrated Hockey coaching experience within a youth sports context, with a strong background across the 6-18 years age bracket 
  • An ability to be an effective team member, including initiative, passion, willingness to collaborate and people management skills to drive holistic sports involvement 
  • Proven experience in coaching and/or leading other coaches in their discipline 
  • A current First Aid and CPR Certificate (or willingness to obtain) 
  • A valid Working with Children clearance (or willingness to obtain).
