ABOUT THE ROLE

We have an exciting opportunity for a Club Psychologist to join our Men’s AFL Medical & Performance Department. This role is responsible for providing psychological support focused on both performance and wellbeing for players within the AFL program. The core objective is to promote and maintain optimal mental health to support peak performance outcomes.
This is a maximum term contract, part-time position, commencing in November of 2025.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Reporting directly to the GM - AFL Football Performance, the key areas of responsibilities will include:
- Provision of psychological counselling and performance-based support to AFL athletes to improve, maintain and enable optimal mental wellbeing that enhances performance-based outcomes.
- Provision of mental health and wellbeing support, and referral services to AFL athletes (i.e., depression, anxiety, disordered sleep).
- Coaching and education for staff and athletes in the AFL program in psychological skills for:
- Maintaining mental health (e.g., mental health first aid, mindfulness, relaxation, stress management, time management)
- Performance improvments (e.g anxiety control, focus and concentration, pre-performance routines, cognitive skills for maintaining performance)
- Psychological profiling of potential new recruits and draftees as required by the List Management team
- Mentor the AFLW Performance Psychologist
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate is a fully registered Psychologist with AHPRA and the Psychology Board of Australia, with at least three years of experience. You have a strong background supporting elite or professional athletes and are confident working within multidisciplinary team environments.
You are someone who is approachable, genuine, adaptable, with strong communication skills. You are passionate about athlete wellbeing and performance, and you are able to build trust, and apply psychological strategies that enhance both mental health and on-field outcomes.
