Description

Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is a world-class yachting facility located on the shores of Moreton Bay, with a proud history of developing sailors from grassroots to elite performance. We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Head Sailing Coach to elevate our coaching standards, strengthen our coaching and instructing team and drive the next phase of youth and performance sailing at the Squadron.

We are seeking a Head Coach who can lead our Training Academy, ensuring high quality instruction and a structured development pathway for sailors of all levels. This role is ideal for a motivated individual who is passionate about growing the sport, fostering new talent, and maintaining a fun and safe learning environment.

Reporting to the Sailing Manager, the Head Coach will lead the delivery of our coaching and development programs across multiple fleets, particularly focused on OTB's including Optis, Lasers, Quests, and growing involvement in keelboat learning pathways. The Head Coach will also need to show experience in foiling and windsurfing which is growing rapidly with participation numbers.

Your role will include coaching and supporting our sailors on the water and at regattas, mentor and develop instructors and coaches, and provide leadership in safety, planning, professionalism and progression.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maintain and deliver high standards of Coaching leadership & team development across all youth programs
  • Establish benchmarks to ensure quality of programs delivered meets expectations of all participants
  • Program review and improvement - identify gaps or inefficiencies within existing programs and make improvements where necessary
  • Support coaches with feedback, training and professional development
  • Provide strategic recommendations to strengthen long-term program outcomes
  • Design and optimise high performance pathway structure and support systems behind youth training & coaching programs
  • Identify opportunities for class-specific performance camps and advanced training blocks
  • Maintain and grow a professional network withing the national and international coaching community
  • Assist with co-ordination, organisation and attend local and interstate regattas to support RQ sailors
  • build lead-in coaching programs to optimise regatta performance and sailor preparedness
  • Coach across multiple classes and formats including OTB dinghies, keelboats, windsurfers and foiling classes
  • maintain strong communication with sailors, families, coaches, volunteers, schools and other club stakeholders
  • support the creation of pathways for sailors who are not pursuing high performance racing, but want to improve their own sailing skills
  • develop options for sailors interested in keelboats, recreational sailing or alternative sailing disciplines

About you:

  • Ensure safety, accreditation and Working with Children compliance
  • Assist with maintaining training equipment and coaching assets
  • contribute to program promotion and reporting
  • You will have demonstrated experience coaching across multiple classes and formats
  • proven leadership capability with experience mentoring and developing coaches
  • strong understanding of youth development and high performance sailing pathways
  • excellent communication, interpersonal and networking skills
  • ability to plan, organise and deliver complex programs and events

Qualifications (preferred):

  • Australian Sailing, RYA or equivalent Coach accreditation (Dinghy, Keelboat, Windsurfing or Performance Coach
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification
  • Powerboat Handling & Safety Boat Operator qualifications
  • Working with Children Check (or equivalent)
  • Additional officiating or specialist coaching qualifications are advantageous
  • Demonstrated experience in similar or related roles
