South East Melbourne Phoenix are a professional basketball team and proud member of the National Basketball League (NBL). Now in our seventh year, we’re chasing our maiden championship and continuing to grow as a key part of both the league and the vibrant South East Melbourne community - the fastest growing corridor for basketball participation in Australia.

We are a club committed to developing the next generation of basketball talent through our Phoenix Academy. Our Academy programs are built on strong fundamentals, professional standards, and a positive, high-performance learning environment that reflects the values of our club.

About the Role

This casual opportunity as Academy Coach, reports through to the Engagement Coordinator is responsible for delivering high-quality basketball training sessions within the Phoenix Academy. This role plays a key part in athlete development, fostering a professional, engaging and inclusive environment where athletes of all levels can learn, grow and thrive.

This is an excellent opportunity for coaches who are passionate about youth development and want to be involved in a professional basketball program connected to an NBL club.

As an Academy Coach, you will:

  • Deliver structured, high-quality 1-hour basketball training sessions aligned to Phoenix Academy standards
  • Provide individualised feedback to athletes to support skill development and performance growth
  • Create a safe, inclusive and high-energy training environment
  • Uphold professional coaching standards and represent the club positively in all interactions
  • Support session setup, pack down and overall program delivery
  • Communicate effectively with participants, parents and Academy staff
  • Adapt sessions to suit varying skill levels and age groups

Please note that our academies operate early morning (from 6.30am on weekdays).

The ideal candidate 

You are an enthusiastic, reliable and development-focused coach who brings energy and professionalism to every session. You will demonstrate:

  • Experience coaching basketball at club, school, academy and/or representative level
  • Experience working with children and/or youth athletes - must hold a valid Employee Working With Children Check
  • Ability to deliver structured training sessions and manage groups effectively
  • Strong time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a coaching team environment
  • An understanding of player development pathways
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong alignment with the values and culture of South East Melbourne Phoenix
