The Role
The primary purpose of the Digital Communications Specialist is to strengthen Paralympics Australia’s storytelling capability and amplify the reach and impact of the Australian Paralympic Movement. Through engaging, accessible and audience-focused digital content, the role will support the promotion and growth of Para sport in Australia, inspire future generations of Paralympians and fans, and elevate the profile and achievements of Australian Para athletes and teams.
Working within the Communications team, the role collaborates across Paralympics Australia and with external stakeholders, including member organisations, partners and government, to identify, develop and share compelling stories that showcase the impact of Para sport and the Paralympic Movement.
The role contributes to increasing awareness and engagement with the Paralympic Movement, demonstrating the impact of Paralympics Australia’s programs and initiatives, and strengthening the organisation’s position as a peak sporting body, charity and Games Delivery Partner for Brisbane 2032.
This role may require occasional interstate travel and weekend work and can be based from our offices in either Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.
The Person
The ideal person for this role is adaptable, strategic and an engaging storyteller, with the judgement to communicate authentically and responsibly. They have excellent writing, planning and relationship management skills, a strong attention to detail, and a passion for building meaningful connections between audiences, Para sport and the Australian Paralympic Movement.
They are confident operating in dynamic and fast-paced environments and bring experience working proactively with athletes, media and stakeholders. Collaborative and well organised, they thrive in a small, high-performing team and understand the responsibility and sensitivities involved in representing Para sport to national and global audiences.
Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver engaging storytelling and public-facing content that showcases the impact of Paralympics Australia, Para athletes, Para sport initiatives and the broader Australian Paralympic Movement.
- Collaborate across Paralympics Australia and with external stakeholders, including member organisations, government and sporting partners, to identify and share coordinated storytelling opportunities.
- Coordinate media, PR and content opportunities aligned to Paralympics Australia’s Strategic Plan and organisational priorities.
- Support storytelling, media planning and profile development for Para sports and Australian Paralympic Teams, including major campaigns and events such as the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games and Brisbane 2032.
- Create and contribute to written, digital and audio-visual content and publications that reflect Paralympics Australia’s brand, values and history.
- Support media, broadcast and communications operations associated with major events, campaigns and community engagement initiatives.
- Monitor media coverage, audience engagement and emerging trends to identify opportunities to strengthen awareness and influence of the Paralympic Movement.
- Contribute to audience engagement, stakeholder relationship management and data capture activities that support the growth and reach of Paralympics Australia
Key Attributes and Competencies
- Demonstrated experience in communications, journalism, public relations or related fields, with highly developed writing, storytelling and content development capability.
- Strong interpersonal, relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and adapt messaging for different audiences.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment, manage competing priorities and exercise initiative and sound judgement to deliver high-quality outcomes. Understanding of the Australian sporting system, media landscape and the importance of inclusive and respectful representation.
Education and Training
- Tertiary qualifications or equivalent demonstrated experience in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field.
- Current Working with Children Check, or ability to obtain one.
- Experience or exposure to sport, major events, the not-for-profit sector, disability inclusion or accessible communications would be advantageous.
- Understanding of the Paralympic Movement or Para sport would be beneficial.
