Description

About us

South East Melbourne Phoenix are a professional basketball team and proud member of the National Basketball League (NBL). Now in our seventh year we are continuing to grow our performance, community and commercial footprint across Australia.

As a club, we value teamwork, passion, and a shared commitment to our goals. You’ll be based at the State Basketball Centre, Australia’s premier basketball facility, where our performance and administrative teams work side-by-side in a culture of collaboration and authenticity.

We’re seeking a motivated Assistant Physiotherapist to play a key role in supporting the delivery of physiotherapy and athlete health services across the Club’s performance program.

About the role

Working under the direction of the Head Physiotherapist and in collaboration with the High Performance Manager, the role provides hands-on treatment, rehabilitation support, injury management and training coverage to ensure players receive consistent and high-quality care throughout the season.

This is a part time opportunity (approximately 19 hours per week) with a fixed term contract for 8 months.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide physiotherapy assessment, treatment, recovery, and injury management services to contracted athletes in line with club medical and performance practices
  • Deliver physiotherapy support across all training sessions, recovery sessions, and NBL home games
  • Provide treatment, strapping/taping, rehabilitation support, and on-court injury management as required
  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of rehabilitation programs
  • Support injured athletes through recovery and return-to-performance pathways
  • Lead physiotherapy delivery for non-travelling players during main squad road trips, ensuring continuity of care
  • Work closely with the Head Physiotherapist, High Performance Manager, coaching staff, and S&C team to optimise athlete health, performance, and availability
  • Maintain accurate treatment notes, rehabilitation records, and medical documentation
  • Contribute to injury reporting and internal communication processes

Please note this role includes match day support at all home games, with evening and weekend work required during the NBL season.

Our ideal candidate

You are a passionate and driven physiotherapist who thrives in high-performance environments and is motivated by helping athletes perform at their best. A qualified Physiotherapist with current AHPRA registration, you bring experience working in elite or high-performance sport, ideally within basketball or other court-based environments.

You have a strong understanding of sports injury management and rehabilitation principles, and take a proactive, hands-on approach to supporting athletes through both performance and recovery. You are confident in your clinical reasoning and contribute effectively to return-to-play outcomes.

A natural relationship builder, you demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to build trust with athletes, coaches, and multidisciplinary staff. You understand the importance of collaboration and are comfortable working both independently and as part of an integrated performance team.

You thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, remaining composed, adaptable, and solutions-focused across the demands of a professional sporting season. Your high level of professionalism, discretion, and attention to detail ensures consistent, high-quality care and accurate documentation.

Our Commitment to Equal Opportunity

South East Melbourne Phoenix is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from suitably qualified and diverse candidates. We provide a welcoming, safe and flexible approach to work and provide an environment that benefits from and enables the best from everyone.

As an organisation we are committed to protecting children and young people from harm. It is essential that anyone involved with South East Melbourne Phoenix understands their responsibility in relation to child safety. Our organisation requires all applicants to obtain a ‘Working with Children Check’ prior to appointment.
