About the role

The Senior Coach is responsible for the management and delivery of an elite training and coaching program that drives on-field performance and supports the continued development of the Williamstown Football Club VFL Men's program. The Senior Coach has primary responsibility for the Club's coaching philosophy, game style, game-day management, pre-season and in-season training and preparation. The role also provides key input into list management, recruitment and the development of players, coaches and football staff.

Key responsibilities

  • Establish and lead a clear, contemporary coaching philosophy and game style that gives Williamstown the best opportunity for sustained success.
  • Design and implement the game plan and pre-season and in-season training programs.
  • Lead match-day coaching, decision-making and review processes.
  • Use game and opposition analysis, performance measures, team trademarks and KPIs to drive learning and continuous improvement.
  • Create a coaching environment in which teaching and player development are central to the program.
  • Develop players individually and collectively through clear role expectations, football education, analysis, one-on-one feedback and targeted coaching.
  • Build strong, authentic and relatable relationships with the playing group, understanding the demands on semi-professional players balancing football with work, study and personal commitments.
  • Set and role-model high standards of behaviour, preparation, professionalism and performance.
  • Build a positive, inclusive and high-performing culture consistent with Williamstown Football Club's values.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and development to coaches and ensure the coaching group operates cohesively and effectively.

About you

  • Demonstrated coaching experience and achievement within a senior, state-league, talent pathway or high-performance football environment, with the capability to lead a VFL program.
  • Strong understanding of contemporary football strategy, game style, training methodology and match-day coaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, develop and improve players individually and collectively.
  • Proven leadership capability, including the ability to establish standards, build culture and create accountability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted, relatable relationships with a diverse playing group.
  • Experience working effectively with assistant coaches, high-performance personnel and multidisciplinary football staff.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with players, staff, Club leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively and resourcefully within a standalone football environment, embracing the opportunities of Williamstown's structure and maximising the people and resources available.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, humility, judgement and commitment to a team-first environment.
  • Relevant coaching accreditation required to coach at VFL level.
