The Australian Flying Disc Association (AFDA) is seeking an independent Appointed Director to join its Board and contribute to the governance and strategic development of a growing national sport.
This role offers an opportunity to support the continued growth of flying disc sports in Australia and contribute to the evolution of AFDA’s governance as the organisation transitions toward a skills-based, majority-independent Board.
About the Role
AFDA Directors contribute to the strategic leadership and governance of the organisation and support the Board in overseeing organisational performance, financial sustainability and risk management.
Directors are expected to:
- contribute to strategic planning and organisational direction
- participate actively in Board meetings and discussions
- support oversight of financial performance and organisational risk
- participate in Board committees where relevant.
The Board meets approximately nine to ten times per year online, in addition to an annual face-to-face strategy weekend and the Annual General Meeting.
Prior experience in flying disc is not required. AFDA welcomes applications from candidates with relevant governance or professional expertise who are interested in contributing to the development of sport in Australia.
Skills and Experience
AFDA is seeking candidates who can contribute to the Board’s skills and diversity profile.
Experience in one or more of the following areas will be particularly valuable:
- sports governance
- communications, marketing or public relations
- branding or sponsorship
- stakeholder engagement.
Candidates must be eligible to act as a company director under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and be able to demonstrate independence from AFDA and its Member Organisations.
Governance Development
AFDA is strengthening its governance capability through targeted recruitment aligned with its Board Skills & Diversity Matrix.
The Board currently comprises seven Directors. Under the current Constitution, five Directors are elected by Member Organisations and two are Board-appointed. Constitutional amendments currently being progressed will transition the Board to a 4:3 elected-to-appointed Director structure.
This recruitment forms part of that governance transition.
