Netball NSW is a not-for-profit organisation governed by a Board of Directors and managed by professional staff. As the peak state sporting body for netball in New South Wales, it is responsible for the governance, development, promotion and administration of the sport, and is affiliated with Netball Australia.

Netball NSW provides a comprehensive framework supporting approximately 119,000 registered members and more than 150,000 participants across all levels of the game. The sport’s continued growth is driven by the wide range of programs, facilities and services offered, from grassroots participation to professional pathways.

Netball NSW has a strong history of elite performance, with over 300 athletes representing the state since 1997, including through the Suncorp Super Netball competition featuring the NSW Swifts and GIANTS Netball.

Purpose of the Position

The purpose of the position is to design and implement training programs revolving around the strength, conditioning, power and movement of Netball NSW Performance and Pathways athletes to maximize performance and minimize injury.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement individualised strengths and conditioning programs on team builder prior to the session being undertaken for each athlete taking into consideration the medical and musculoskeletal screening and fitness test results for Emerging Athlete Program (EAP) 17U & 19U State Team.
  • Management of the strength, conditioning and recovery programs to maximise performance of the Emerging Athlete Program (EAP) 17U & 19U State Team & Performance Umpires.
  • Lead physical testing and monitor athlete physical development of Netball NSW 17U & 19U State Team, EAP, Emerging Talent teams, Sydney Netball Academy & Performance Umpires.
  • Lead communication to Premier League franchises, EAP/SSN stakeholders regarding player load, player availability and injury management which extends to Netball Australia where required.
  • In conjunction with the physiotherapy and medical services team, contribute to maximising athlete availability through effective injury prevention practices, return to play outcomes and minimising injury recurrence in rehabilitation of Emerging Athlete Program (EAP) 17U & 19U State Team athletes.
  • Plan and lead physical preparation of Netball NSW State and Emerging Teams.
  • Report and maximise the use of athlete management systems (AMS) for Netball NSW State Teams and EAP athletes.
  • Provide physical data for athlete IAPP’s for Netball NSW Performance programs.
  • Lead and develop court warm up protocols for pre training and games for Netball NSW State team performance programs.
  • Attend Netball NSW State, EAP and Emerging Teams training sessions.
  • Liaise regularly with Head Coaches of all programs.
  • Attend and contribute to Performance Team meetings for EAP or SSN as required to review and discuss each athlete’s progression plus planning.
  • Manage Strength and Conditioning Interns as required.
  • Oversee the development of a strength and conditioning program for the 12 Regional Academies of Sport.
  • Lead evolution of Netball NSW Physical Performance Framework.
  • Lead education sessions to maximise consistency of delivery of strength and conditioning program at Regional Academics of Sport
  • Plan, prepare and lead 12 X 45 minute on court activation, movement and strength sessions for Sydney Netball Academy Squad.
  • Assist in creating a hardworking and enjoyable environment during strength and conditioning sessions.
  • Provide and keep records of all strength and conditioning sessions administered.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Exercise Science (minimum qualification).
  • 2+ years’ experience working in high performance sport.
  • ESSA exercise science accreditation or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully develop, implement and manage strength, conditioning, recovery and rehabilitation programs for elite athletes.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse data.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide timely, compelling and concise advice to inform and support decision making.
  • ASCA Level 2 Strength and Conditioning Coach or working towards.
  • Current Drivers’ license.
  • Working with Children Check.
  • First Aid Qualification.

Experience:

  • 2+ years’ experience working with elite athletes.
  • Experience in working with elite individual athletes and sporting teams within a high-performance sporting environment.
  • Experience in working within a multidisciplinary performance team environment to achieve sports outcomes.

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of strength and conditioning theories and best practice related to high performance sports.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physiological principles theories and best practice related to high performance sports.
  • Knowledge of the structure and systems associated with high performance sport and the development of elite athletes for success in the national and international arena.
  • Knowledge of the quality assurance process for testing and monitoring in elite sport.
  • Will be able to energise and motivate players to achieve an elite level of performance.
  • Will be able to form strong relationships with athletes and display a high level of coaching to influence behaviours.
  • Will have strong planning and management skills, be highly organised and a good decision maker.
  • Will be able to work independently as well as lead and drive a dynamic team to pursue team goals, share information, support others, show consideration and respect for alternative ideas and solutions.
  • Due to the nature of the industry, the ideal candidate must be flexible in their availability as extended hours and weekend work will be required for this role.

Skills:

  • Ability to drive a high-performance training environment.
  • Ability to coach and teach strength and conditioning techniques to a range of athletes emphasising dynamic correspondence including plyometric, agility and weightlifting movements.
  • Engage and educate athletes on goals and associated training programs.
  • Demonstrated experience of dealing with complex sport injuries and implementing successful rehabilitation programs under the direction of a physiotherapist.
  • Conduct and report on court and laboratory-based testing protocols.
  • Capability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team as well as the ability to work independently and possess a high level of personal initiative and autonomy.

Key Performance Indicators:

Netball NSW carries out performance appraisals, against pre-determined performance objectives on an annual basis.

  • Team athletes are provided with high quality Individual Athlete Performance Plans (IAPP) and service delivery.
  • Personal compliance with Netball NSW Policies and Procedures.
  • Other KPI’s to be determined with the successful candidate.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK (WWCC)

In accordance with Child Protection legislation candidates will be required to provide a Working With Children Check (WWCC) clearance number for verification by Netball NSW prior to employment. Selection of the successful candidate will be based upon the results of child protection screening and relevant reference checks.
