About Us

Rowing Australia is the national governing body for rowing in Australia, responsible for leading, administering and growing the sport nationally. We support rowing from community participation through to Australia’s Olympic and Paralympic high-performance programs, while working to protect, grow and innovate the sport for future generations.

We are seeking a Data Scientist / Senior Data Scientist to lead and evolve Rowing Australia’s performance intelligence capability and help turn complex data into meaningful insights that support coaches, athletes and performance teams.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of data science, analytics, technology and high-performance sport, contributing directly to athlete development and international performance.

About the role

Working within Rowing Australia’s High Performance team and embedded in the Daily Performance Environment, you will lead the development of data systems, analytics and decision-support tools that improve evidence-informed decision making.

You will work closely with coaches, sport science, sports medicine and performance staff to translate data into practical insights, while also helping shape Rowing Australia’s broader High Performance Data Strategy.

For candidates appointed at the Senior Data Scientist level, the role will also include broader leadership of strategic projects, partnerships and capability development across the High Performance system.

Key responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the development and evolution of Rowing Australia’s High Performance Data Strategy.
  • Design and improve data systems, pipelines, dashboards and reporting tools.
  • Develop advanced analytics, statistical models and machine learning solutions to support athlete and crew performance.
  • Lead performance analysis, benchmarking and predictive modelling.
  • Translate complex data into clear, practical insights for coaches and performance teams.
  • Identify opportunities to use emerging technology and artificial intelligence to strengthen performance intelligence.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to improve data capability, governance and innovation.

At the Senior Data Scientist level, you will also provide broader technical leadership, lead national strategic projects and build capability across the High Performance system.

About you

You will bring:

  • A degree and/or higher qualification in data science, computer science, mathematics, economics or a related field.
  • Strong experience using SQL, Python and data platforms such as Snowflake or SQL Server.
  • Experience developing and evaluating statistical and machine learning models.
  • Experience working with GitLab or GitHub.
  • Strong data visualisation and storytelling skills.
  • The ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • An interest in, or understanding of, high-performance sport.

Experience leading data professionals and providing senior-level technical advice will be particularly relevant for appointment at the Senior Data Scientist level.

Additional requirements

This position may require weekend work or work outside ordinary working hours.
