ABOUT THE ROLE

Football Australia is looking for a Data Scientist to turn complex football data into clear and actionable insights across the Football Department. As part of the Football Intelligence team you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop models and insights using event, tracking, physical performance, scouting and player-monitoring data.
  • Support National Teams, Talent Identification and Coach Education through evidence-based analysis and practical analytical tools.
  • Deliver accessible reports, dashboards and visualisations for coaches, analysts, technical staff and performance practitioners.
  • Contribute to player monitoring, performance benchmarking, talent pathways, football research and technical development.
  • Apply strong Python or R, data visualisation and communication skills within a collaborative football environment.
  • Desirably, bring complementary capability across SQL, APIs, automated pipelines, cloud platforms, Git, CI/CD, data quality and governance.

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop data models, metrics and insights by combining performance, tracking and event datasets to support football decision-making.
  • Collaborate with coaches, analysts and performance staff to translate technical, tactical and physical data into clear reports, dashboards and visualisations.
  • Build and maintain analytical tools, databases and reporting solutions that support National Teams, talent identification and player monitoring.
  • Lead the integration, management and analysis of scouting, performance and player data to inform selection and development pathways.
  • Produce standardised reporting for opposition analysis, match reviews, tournaments and stakeholder reporting.
  • Support research projects, coach education programs and the Technical Department through data analysis, presentations and learning resources.
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure best practice in data management, architecture and reporting while contributing to Football Australia's strategic objectives.

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES

  • Experience in football or high-performance sport, including pre and post-match analysis and reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of football data platforms and datasets, including event, tracking and scouting data.
  • Advanced programming skills in Python and/or R, with experience in data analysis and modelling.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and automated data pipelines (AWS, Snowflake, DataBricks or similar) and front-end visualisation via PowerBi, Tableau or app deployment.
  • Ability to translate complex data into clear insights and presentations for coaches, players and stakeholders.
  • Strong collaboration, communication and stakeholder management skills within elite sporting environments.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, problem-solving ability and capacity to perform under pressure both independently and as part of a team.
