The Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) is seeking an exceptional sports medicine leader to join our High Performance team as Chief Medical Officer. As WAIS continues its journey towards LA 2028, Brisbane 2032 and beyond, this is a unique opportunity to influence athlete healthcare, clinical governance and performance health strategy while ensuring our medical services, governance frameworks and healthcare systems remain world-class and athlete-centred.

This part time (0.2FTE) opportunity is ideally suited to an experienced Sports and Exercise Physician who is passionate about high performance sport, clinical leadership and building systems that enable athletes to perform at their best while living our philosophy of Winning Well.

About the Role
Reporting to the High Performance Director, the Chief Medical Officer serves as WAIS's senior medical leader, providing strategic oversight of clinical governance, physician alignment, patient safety and healthcare delivery across the organisation. 

The role acts as the primary escalation point for complex and high-risk clinical matters and provides expert advice on medical policy, clinical standards and athlete healthcare systems. 

The role requires a regular on-site presence at WAIS to support clinical oversight, relationship building and integration within the High Performance team.

Key areas of focus include:

• Leading clinical governance, patient safety and medical quality across WAIS. 
• Establishing and maintaining clinical standards and best practice frameworks. 
• Providing strategic medical advice to the CEO, Board and High Performance Director. 
• Supporting the development and continuous improvement of WAIS's medical service model.
• Guiding and aligning contracted Sports Physicians and medical service delivery. 
• Building strong relationships across the National Institute Network and the broader Australian high-performance sport system.
• Contributing to multidisciplinary athlete care and performance health initiatives. 

While the role is primarily focused on leadership, governance and strategic oversight, the Chief Medical Officer may provide direct clinical consultation where required to support continuity of care and manage clinical risk.

About You
You are an experienced Sports and Exercise Physician with extensive experience in high-performance sport and a proven ability to provide strategic leadership within complex clinical environments.

Essential Requirements:

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
• Current registration with AHPRA.
• Fellowship of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (FACSEP).
• A minimum of eight years' experience providing sports medicine support in high-performance sport.
• Demonstrated experience in senior clinical leadership, governance and risk management.
• Strong knowledge of the Australian high-performance sport system.
• Outstanding stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills.

Highly Regarded:

• Olympic, Paralympic and/or Commonwealth Games experience.
• Experience within the National Institute Network.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary health services or performance support teams.
• Knowledge of contemporary athlete wellbeing, integrity and anti-doping frameworks.
