ORGANISATIONAL OVERVIEW

Northside Wizards is a basketball club based in Zillmere in the northern suburbs of Brisbane and is the premier basketball organisation in northern Brisbane. The association competes in both domestic and representative competitions through its affiliation with Basketball Queensland with home games held at the Northside Indoor Sports Centre and South Pine Sports Complex. Committed to delivering an exceptional basketball experience, Northside Wizards offers various programs, including junior and senior competitions, coaching development, introduction to basketball programs and a leading officials program, fostering community engagement and promoting the sport across all age groups.

PURPOSE

To lead and support Northside Wizards Basketball in fostering a culture of excellence by driving the recruitment, training, development, and retention of referees, game officials, and scoretable officials. This role emphasises leadership in building a highly skilled and motivated team of officials to serve local domestic basketball and junior representative competitions, ensuring their ongoing growth and professional development to meet the highest standards of the game.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following list of duties and responsibilities is not exhaustive and is provided as a guide. Other duties may be required from time to time:

  • Lead and conduct regular development activities for Referees, Referee Coaches, Scoretable and Game Officials at Northside Wizards Basketball.
  • Coordinate the selection of referees for Basketball Queensland Representative Competitions.
  • Drive the recruitment of new officials to support the growth of Northside Wizards Basketball competitions.
  • Develop course content and materials for all referee accreditation courses in conjunction with Basketball Queensland.
  • Liaise and collaborate with stakeholders, including Basketball Queensland staff and management, association clubs, and Basketball Australia, to enhance officials education and development.
  • Oversee or assist in rostering referees for Northside Wizards Basketball and Basketball Queensland competitions as required and directed.
  • Support the development and implementation of policies and procedures for Northside Wizards Basketball Officials programs.
  • Adhere to relevant Northside Wizards Basketball policies and risk management strategies.
  • Provide regular reports on activities and outcomes to the CEO.
  • Perform any other duties as directed by the CEO.

Essential Requirements

  • Strong Passion for Basketball: Demonstrated interest and commitment to the sport of basketball and its development.
  • Refereeing Expertise: High-level skill in all facets of basketball refereeing, including rules interpretation and the ability to lead and expand referee development programs for associations.
  • Leadership and Development Skills: Strong ability to mentor, train, and support referees and referee coordinators to foster growth and excellence.
  • Working with Children Compliance: Current positive notice for working with children (Blue Card).
  • Legal Work Entitlement: Legal right to work in Australia.
  • Driver’s License and Vehicle: A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for work purposes.
  • Customer-Focused Mindset: Ability to understand and address issues from member associations’ perspectives, remaining solution-oriented and providing a calming influence when expectations are not met.
  • Communication and Relationship Building: High-level written and oral communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage and negotiate with a diverse range of stakeholders, fostering strong relationships.
  • Time Management and Flexibility: Excellent organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and adapt to working outside regular business hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the ability to update websites.
  • Professional Conduct: High standard of personal appearance, punctuality, respectful communication, and professional demeanour.
  • Rules and Competition Knowledge: Strong literacy skills to interpret and apply the rules of basketball and competition.

Desirable Criteria

  • Understanding of Basketball Structures: Knowledge of (or ability to acquire) basketball’s organisational structure in Queensland and the pathways for players, referees, and officials.
  • Experience in a Similar Role: At least two years’ experience in referee development, sports administration, or a related role.
  • Educational Background: A tertiary qualification in teaching, sports management, or a related field.
  • Policy Development Skills: Experience in creating and implementing policies and procedures to enhance referee development programs.
  • Accredited Level 2 Referee Coach or NBL1 Level Referee
