Basketball Queensland is committed to providing visible and clear pathways for Wheelchair athletes to progress from participation into a High Performance environment.
This role is a collaborative position between QAS (Queensland Academy of Sport) and Basketball Queensland that will be embedded in the QAS environment and work in collaboration with the performance service team. This role will work between the Basketball Queensland office (Crestmead) and QAS office (Nathan).
The Queensland Wheelchair Basketball Coach will be responsible for delivering a decentralised program that maximises the development of elite Queensland wheelchair basketball athletes, to achieve National and International success in line with the national program direction and targets.
The key focus will be to coordinate and deliver the daily training environment scheduling for categorised athletes supported by the QAS, the identification and nomination of athletes to the national wheelchair basketball program.
The role requires remote supervision and regular visits to on court training sessions throughout Queensland including Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. Increase the number of Queensland athletes and coaches representing Australian teams on the international stage, while driving the individual development and improvement of athletes to the next level of AIS categorisations.
Performance Indicators
Planning
- Work with the Performance and Pathways Manager (PPM) to develop and review annual operational plan and budget for Basketball Queensland’s High Performance Wheelchair Program. (BQHPWP)
- Develop annual schedule in consultation with Basketball Australia (BA), Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) for selection, training, competitions and camps for the BQHPWP.
- Develop annual plan and stages for each squad within the BQHPWP.
- Establish and reinforce the culture and values of the BQHPWP with all stakeholders
- Provide training schedule to High Performance Program Coordinator for venue bookings.
- Coordinate development and review of Individual Performance Plans for each categorised athlete in consultation with relevant coaches.
Staff Development
- Establish strong working relationship with BA Head Coaches for wheelchair basketball to ensure consistency with national programs.
- Coordinate the recruitment of coaches and support staff for all high performance sessions.
- Conduct annual meetings with all coaches and support staff to review culture, values, calendar, reporting expectations, and ensure all governance requirements for BA, QAS, and BQ are met.
- Develop Individual Performance Plan (IPP) with each BQHPWP coach and review quarterly
- Establish clear communication channels with coaches and support staff involved in the BQHPWP, including access to athlete IPP’s and reporting data.
- Provide mentoring and professional development opportunities for each coach
- Provide regular constructive feedback to coaches and support staff to support their development and effectiveness.
Coaching
- Recruitment, identification and engagement of new Queensland coaches to help build the depth of talent, and provide BA National program options for International coaching
- Provide elite-level coaching at all individual and team/squad training sessions
- Share session plans prior to each session with relevant coaches and support staff to ensure coordination of efforts and consistency with annual schedule.
- Develop clear communication channels for each team/squad.
- Plan testing and feedback for athletes with QAS strength and conditioning coach, coordinated with the national approach to S&C
- Improve the categorisation levels of all Queensland athletes across the State while increasing representation on Australian (BA) National teams.
Reporting
- Liaise with PPM to ensure athletes are compliant with reporting on AMS
- Attend fortnightly BA coach teleconference, and ensure a strong working relationship with National head coaches of the Gliders & Rollers for athlete development
- Provide monthly update to PPM.
- Provide regular athlete categorisation list updates to BA staff and coaches.
Qualifications and certification:
- Basketball Australia Association Coach Accreditation (Level 2) or higher, or relevant basketball and/or wheelchair coaching experience
- Current Working with Children Check (Blue Card) and Criminal History Screening Check (yellow card), or the ability to attain prior to commencing position.
- Current first aid certificate with CPR
- Current Queensland drivers’ licence and willingness to drive vehicles.
Practical experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience coaching basketball at state or higher level.
- Knowledge of and experience within the Australian basketball industry and it’s pathways
- Experience in supervision and coordination of staff and volunteers
- Demonstrated ability to oversee a high performance sporting program (preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to successfully meet deadlines, manage competing priorities and complete administration tasks accurately and in a timely manner
- Awareness of work health and safety issues, and ability to adhere to work health and safety protocols
- Ability to recruit, transition and develop coaches and athletes in a similar HP basketball environment.
- Experience working with people with a disability.
- Demonstrated experience of working with and integrating Performance Service’s into high performance programs (desirable)
