About ESFA
Eastern Suburbs Football Association (ESFA) is the governing body for football in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, supporting more than 10,000 players across 24 clubs and over 250 registered referees. ESFA delivers competitions for participants from age 5 through to all-age and is committed to helping clubs, players, coaches, referees, and volunteers reach their potential.
Purpose of the Role
The Referee and Match Review Officer is responsible for the recruitment, education, appointment, and retention of referees to ensure appropriate coverage across ESFA competitions. The role also manages all match review, judiciary, and disciplinary administration, and oversees referee education logistics, equipment, and payments.
Key Responsibilities
Referee Management and Appointments
- Drive referee recruitment, registration, and retention initiatives.
- Coordinate referee education courses and requirements in liaison with Football NSW.
- Allocate and communicate referee appointments for ESFA and Football NSW branch fixtures.
- Coordinate referee payments and associated club invoicing.
- Order and distribute referee equipment and clothing to registered officials.
Administration and Governance
- Act as Secretary to the Referees Branch Committee, including organising and supporting meetings and seasonal briefings.
- Ensure high standards of ethics, confidentiality, and integrity in competition administration.
- Prepare and provide reports as required.
Match Review, Judiciary, and Discipline
- Manage post-fixture administration, ensuring:
- Results and match sheets are submitted within required timelines.
- Competition tables are maintained accurately.
- Coordinate and administer the ESFA Judiciary and Disciplinary Review Committee in accordance with ESFA regulations.
- Receive, assess, and document referee reports, incident reports, and supporting materials.
- Participate in disciplinary review decisions, including suspensions, sanctions, and penalties.
- Manage escalations professionally and in a timely manner.
Operational Support
- Provide administrative and operational support for ESFA competitions, including finals, grand finals, meetings, and special events.
Reporting
- Reports directly to the ESFA Chief Executive Officer.
- No direct reports.
Work Requirements
- Weekend and evening work is required, particularly during the season (March–September).
- The role requires weekend on-call availability to support competition operations.
- Flexibility is supported through adjusted work schedules and time in lieu.
