Executive Leadership Role | High Performance Sport | 2-Year Fixed Term

Tasman Rugby Union (TRU) is seeking an exceptional high-performance leader to take on the dual role of Director of Rugby & Head Coach - Tasman Mako.

This is a rare opportunity to lead one of New Zealand’s most respected provincial programmes, driving both on-field success and long-term high-performance strategy across the Tasman region.

About the Role

Reporting to the CEO, you will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of all Tasman Rugby Union high-performance programmes, including:

  • Tasman Mako Men’s (NPC)
  • Tasman Mako Women’s (FPC)
  • Age-grade and emerging talent pathways (U16–U20)

You will also serve as Head Coach of the Tasman Mako, leading the team to compete for NPC success while embedding a high-performance culture across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute TRU’s high-performance rugby strategy and vision
  • Head Coach the Tasman Mako NPC team
  • Define and embed the “Mako Style of Play” across all programmes
  • Oversee player development pathways from school to professional rugby
  • Lead recruitment, retention, and succession planning of elite players
  • Build and mentor high-performing coaching and support staff
  • Manage high-performance programmes, camps, and competition delivery
  • Drive alignment with Crusaders, NZ Rugby, and national pathways
  • Lead stakeholder engagement across clubs, schools, and rugby networks
  • Oversee high-performance planning, budgets, and reporting

What We’re Looking For

This role requires a proven, high-impact leader with deep rugby expertise:

Essential Experience & Capability:

  • Minimum 10+ years high-level coaching experience
  • Proven success in elite or professional rugby environments
  • Demonstrated Head Coach experience with strong performance outcomes
  • Extensive knowledge of high-performance systems, athlete development, and modern coaching methodologies
  • Proven ability to build and lead high-performing teams and environments
  • Strong strategic, operational, and people leadership capability
  • Experience in talent identification, recruitment, and pathway management
  • Excellent communication skills, including media and stakeholder engagement
  • World Rugby Level 3 Coaching Accreditation (or equivalent)

Additional Information

  • Nelson/ Blenheim based role
  • Two (2) year fixed-term contract
