Junior Rowing Coach (Casual)

About the Role

  • Coach Year 7–9 boys in coxed quads.
  • The season runs from August to March.
  • Sessions held at Xavier Boatshed (Hawthorn) and Xavier College (Kew).
  • Be part of a coaching team of 14+ with strong support from the Junior Coordinator and Head of Rowing.
  • Weekly training programs provided – coaches are encouraged to contribute, adapt, and help improve them.
  • Regular coach development workshops, mentoring sessions, and feedback to support your growth.
  • Enjoy a positive and welcoming team culture, including coach social events throughout the season.
  • A chance to develop and progress through the program, with pathways to coach higher crews as you gain experience.
  • Regattas involve full-day attendance and travel on team buses.

Key Performance Indicators and Selection Criteria

  • A demonstrated interest in and understanding of rowing, with experience coaching or assisting with school-aged crews.
  • Ability to foster enthusiasm, teamwork, and a positive training environment for junior athletes.
  • Supportive and encouraging coaching style that builds student confidence and promotes skill development.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build effective relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Reliable, organised, and able to follow instructions and contribute positively to a wider coaching team.
  • Willingness to learn and grow as a coach, including receiving feedback and engaging in training or mentoring.
  • Committed to creating a respectful and inclusive team culture aligned with the values of the school.
  • Understanding of basic training principles, safety procedures, and regatta preparation appropriate for junior rowers.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a safe, child-focused environment and uphold the school’s Child Safety policies and practices.
  • Professional in presentation, punctuality, and conduct.
  • Enthusiastic contributor to the Ignatian ethos and values of a Jesuit school community.
  • Capacity to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a school sporting environment.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Prior experience coaching or assisting with junior rowing crews, ideally within a school or club environment. New coaches are encouraged to apply as well.
  • A current Level 1 Rowing Coaching Accreditation (or willingness to obtain), with a focus on safe and effective coaching of beginner to intermediate athletes.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply fundamental coaching principles in a school-based or development-focused setting.
  • Current Working with Children Check (or equivalent), and commitment to upholding Child Safety Standards.

Compliance Requirements:

  • Working With Children Check ‘E’ card.
  • Australian Childhood Foundation “Safeguarding Children” and all child safety requirements. (on appointment)
  • Australian Jesuits Code of Conduct and acceptance of the Code (on appointment)
  • First Aid accreditation including CPR, Anaphylaxis, Asthma Management.
