Description

The Queensland Academy of Sport’s mission is to inspire extraordinary sporting success. We recently brought this mission to life when 191 Queensland athletes proudly wore green and gold while representing Australia at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Paris 2024 will go down in history as Australia’s best ever Games, setting the bar high for the next Olympic and Paralympic cycle. The QAS is now on a mission to deliver more medals across more sports at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, in anticipation of hosting Australia’s most successful Games in Queensland in 2032.

The QAS supports more than 500 elite athletes on their sporting journey from talented juniors to Olympians, Paralympians and World Champions. Our expert staff support athletes through in-house programs, partnerships with State and National Sporting Organisations, and individualised support for athletes on medal-winning trajectories to help them perform when it matters most.

Our ambitious high-performance strategy for the 2032 Games is to create more medal-winning moments for Queensland athletes that inspire their state and nation. While this strategy defines our goals, our organisation’s culture is what will help us achieve them. Therefore, the QAS is looking for highly talented and motivated individuals whose values and behaviours align with ours, to join our QAS Team.

The roles and responsibilities include:

  • Provide world-leading evidence-based strength and conditioning services and advice to coaches and QAS categorised athletes in line with each athlete’s Individual Athlete Performance Plan (IAPP) which is aligned with their What It Takes to Win (WITTW) framework.
  • Deliver sport-specific training in field settings, ensuring tailored programs meet the unique demands of the sport and optimize athlete performance.
  • Design and implement strength and conditioning programs for youth athletes that focus on age-appropriate training to build foundational movement skills, optimize athletic performance, and promote long-term physical development while minimizing injury risk.
  • Deliver specific and relevant performance testing and tracking/monitoring for QAS categorised athletes, providing timely feedback to the coaches, athletes and Performance Support team members.
  • Utilise current and emerging technologies for athlete testing and monitoring, interpret results and translate insights into actionable strategies that enhance performance.
  • Contribute to the development of IAPPs and assist in regularly reviewing the associated specific development priorities and performance metrics to measure progress.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary performance support team that creates a high performance environment to provide an integrated program based on the level and needs for QAS supported athletes. This includes spending an appropriate amount of time in the daily training environment (DTE) and attending weekly Performance Support team meetings.
  • Regularly liaise with key internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to Surfing Australia (SA) and Skate Australia High Performance departments to collaboratively identify current sport specific S&C trends to deliver high quality integrated outcomes.
  • Undertake domestic travel as required to support athlete preparation and performance at training camps and competitions.
  • Collect, store, and share athlete data/vision in the Athlete Management System (AMS) and other approved platforms in line with QAS expectations.
  • Demonstrate high level responsibility for the application of agreed National Quality Assurance Standards relating to data collection, methods and equipment maintenance and utilise QAS approved systems for athlete programming, monitoring, reporting and data management.
  • Stay informed and abreast of current advancement in strength and conditioning training methodologies and technologies. This includes working collaboratively on approved applied research projects which contribute to the effectiveness of the coach and athlete in training and competition.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider Australian High Performance system (including State Institutes, AIS, International and Professional elite sport networks) to share knowledge and leverage opportunities.
  • Provide a safe, and safe environment for QAS supported athletes and any other children and young people engaged with the QAS, free from physical, sexual and emotional abuse or neglect.
  • As a member of the QAS team, take shared accountability for setting a high performance culture to enable successful outcomes. This also includes adhering to the highest ethical and professional standards at all times.
  • Comply with the Code of Conduct for the Queensland Public Service, Public Service Values and departmental policies and positively contribute to a high-performing workplace culture that is respectful, inclusive and safe.
  • Demonstrate cultural capability and a commitment to cultural safety for Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) is committed to the safety and wellbeing of our athletes.

We are committed to an environment where athletes from any background are heard, treated fairly and free from abuse.
