Description

The primary purpose of the General Manager - Operations role is deliver on a range of strategic objectives related to the overall growth and development of rowing in WA and oversight of the smooth conduct of all Rowing WA regattas and off-water events.

The position will design/refine and implement club, coach, official and athlete development initiatives to improve the recruitment and retention pathways for each of these stakeholder groups. It will also oversee the successful delivery of Rowing WA’s regattas and events portfolio including supporting the delivery of national regattas (when hosted in WA).

The position requires a highly motivated and energetic individual with proven sports development experience and strong leadership and communication, relationship building, event management and organisational skills. The ability to forge a close working relationship with Rowing WA affiliated bodies, staff, volunteers and other key stakeholders will be essential to the successful achievement of this position’s objectives.

KEY DUTIES

Strategy & Governance

  • Oversight and delivery of strategic outcomes related to core responsibility areas
  • Support the CEO in management of Board, Committee, Working Group and other key stakeholder meetings
  • Work with the CEO to ensure compliance with Government regulation (e.g. Child Safeguarding Principles) and alignment with DLGSC best practice Sport Governance principles

Club Development

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with affiliated clubs to support the provision of best practices resources to enhance their capacity and capabilities
  • Oversee the delivery of an annual series of professional development sessions/ workshops to help improve club governance and management
  • Lead the development and delivery of cross-club and whole of sport growth and development initiatives

Coach Development

  • Develop and manage the Rowing WA Coaching Development Strategy to ensure the provision of:
    • sufficient accredited coaches to support current and future needs
    • appropriate opportunities to support the continued development of coaches’ skills and knowledge and practical application
  • Lead the optimisation and ongoing implementation of the Rowing Australia Coach Accreditation Scheme in WA
  • Lead the planning, administration and delivery of the WA Coaches Conference

Officials Development

  • Review and administer Rowing WA’s Boat Race Officials and Regatta Volunteer Strategy including management of the recruitment, retention, recognition and education of Boat Race Officials

Athlete Development Programs

Lead the optimisation and delivery of programs across the following Rowing WA market segments:

State Teams

  • Coordinate State Team operations in collaboration with the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS)
  • Manage the WA Masters State Team selection and operations

Pathways

  • Actively support the delivery of the Pathways program in collaboration with WAIS

Masters Rowing

  • Develop and implement a Masters Rowing Framework
  • Chair the Rowing WA Masters Committee

Para-Rowing

  • Review and implement the annual Para-Rowing plan
  • Recruit and manage Para-Rowing support to assist with program delivery

School Rowing

  • Lead the ongoing development and implementation of programs designed to facilitate progression from school rowing to club rowing
  • Lead the development of strategies to increase the number of non-traditional rowing schools and club-based school-focussed rowing programs

Coxswains

  • Lead the review, development and implementation of a new approach to coxswains development for WA

Regatta/Event Management

  • Oversee all aspects of regatta planning, delivery and review
  • Play a key role in the management and delivery of national regattas hosted in WA
  • Oversee the successful delivery of all non-regatta events such as the Rower of the Year Awards, Open Days, development workshops, rowing camps, coaching courses, conferences and other professional development initiatives
  • Work with the CEO to ensure a vibrant program of on-water and off-water events

Administration

  • Represent Rowing WA at relevant events (state/national/local) and on relevant committees/working groups as required;
  • Lead the use of the Revolutionise Sport Membership Management System;
  • Manage Rowing WA’s Working with Children compliance with State Legislation;
  • Assist in securing and acquitting government and corporate grants and funding to support development within the sport.
  • Assist other staff and portfolios within Rowing WA if and when required

Any other duties within the Employee’s capabilities and that are reasonable to expect the Employee to undertake as directed by the CEO from time to time

The nature of the position will require out of hours and weekend work.

Essential Requirements

  • Drivers Licence
  • Strong proven ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, leading to successful partnerships, increased membership engagement, and enhanced sport development outcomes
  • A minimum of five years demonstrated success in strategic planning and designing and implementing athlete, coach, official and club development strategies, resulting in tangible growth and improved pathways within the sport
  • A minimum of three years previous proficiency in planning and overseeing regattas (or other sporting events), workshops, clinics and other events, with a track record of seamless execution and positive participant feedback
  • A minimum of three years of senior management / leadership experience, with a people-first attitude and holistic view toward strategic goal achievement
  • Effective time management skills, ability to meet deadlines and prioritise tasks in a fast-paced work environment
  • Current Working with Children Check (or ability to apply prior to commencement in role)

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge and understanding of the sport of rowing
