Description

Bendigo Academy of Sport (BAS) is an incorporated, not-for-profit, community-based sport organisation and member of the Victorian Regional Academies of Sport (VRAS) network. It is committed to providing opportunities for talented young athletes in regional Victoria to achieve excellence in their chosen sports. BAS works with athletes and their families to create and deliver programs and services that maximise their opportunities to be successful. BAS’ office is located within the La Trobe University Business School at the Bendigo Campus.

The BAS provides talented Central and Northern Victorian athletes with high performance services in areas including specialist coaching, physical preparation, strength and conditioning, sport science and education programs of excellence, to enhance their chances of state, national, and international representation.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Chair and Board, the Executive Officer (EO) will:

  • Contribute to the development of the Board’s strategy and be responsible for its implementation, including regular reporting of performance to the Board.
  • Assist the Board to appropriately govern the Academy including development of policies and associated procedures and be responsible for the financial management of the Academy.
  • Manage staff, coaches, sub-contractors, and volunteers, and oversee all operational matters.
  • Represent the Academy when dealing with local government, State Government, Sport and Recreation Victoria, Victorian Institute of Sport, VRAS, education partners, other key stakeholders and the community.

The role requires an outstanding team leader with strategic vision, business acumen, strong program and project management skills, an innovative, flexible and decisive work style along with high level negotiation, presentation and communication skills. The EO is responsible for the management of the BAS by continually developing and implementing processes, systems, and programs to support the mission, vision, and strategic and operational aims of the Academy.  The EO will need to exercise a significant level of autonomy within guidelines set by the Board and Sport and Recreation Victoria through organisational KPIs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensure the ongoing:

  • Quality of the BAS product to local aspiring athletes and coaches to attract the highest calibre of talent.
  • Effective implementation and management of the current BAS strategic plan and assist the Board with the development of the next strategic plan.
  • Management of athlete education and physical development programs.
  • Growth of the Academy by attracting government, sporting and local business partners.
  • Development of marketing strategies that enhance the promotion of the Academy across Central and Northern Victoria.
  • Professional business practices in relation to strategic, operational, legal, financial and human resource management.
  • Timely provision of documentation to the Board, VIS, and levels of Government to facilitate efficient and effective governance.

Contribute to the:

  • Achievement of the Academy’s vision, mission, and strategic goals in an ethical and sustainable manner.
  • Strong relationships the Academy has with key stakeholders including the Victorian Institute of Sport, state and local government, state sporting associations, Victorian Regional Academies of Sport, local athletes and coaches, educational institutions, sponsors and partners, and the Central and Northern Victorian community.

KEY DUTIES

Key duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Liaise with parents/guardians of athletes and coaches and provide appropriate support as requested.
  • Monitor the performance of all Academy staff and activities and prepare reports for Board meetings.
  • Service the Board and Board sub-committees with meeting agendas, minutes and reports as required.
  • Prepare reports for other external stakeholders including the Victorian Institute of Sport, Sport and Recreation Victoria, and the Victorian Regional Academies of Sport.
  • Liaise with all forms of the media, ensuring regular optimum coverage is provided for Academy activities, distribute media releases and be a media spokesperson as required. Oversee the management of the BAS website and newsletters.
  • Develop all Academy and program budgets.
  • Manage the introduction, delivery and review of the high-performance programs and their support personnel.
  • Monitor the development, planning, delivery and review of talent development programs.
  • Manage any outsourcing of Academy business.
  • Attract, develop, present and service all organisational sponsors and partnerships.
  • Actively develop and promote strategic alliances with other key organisations, (e.g. VIS and other regional Academies), including local sporting organisations.
  • Develop and present applications for grants and funding.
  • Monitor all contractual arrangements with all internal and external partners.
  • Actively participate in the development, planning, delivery and review of other Academy activities.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments within the sporting fraternity, particularly with junior sport.
  • Manage key relationships with the local government, State Government, VIS, VRAS, La Trobe University, sponsors and partners, clubs, schools, and other community organisations.
  • Liaising and working with other peak bodies to continue to enhance the ongoing viability of the Academy and to continuously improve the sport program.
  • Vigorously uphold and promote Academy ideals, objectives and goals.
  • Ensuring regular two-way communication and active engagement with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Other duties as directed to support the overall success of BAS.

This is a full-time position. Due to the nature of the role and the sports industry, applicants must be able to work flexible hours (including nights and weekends) to meet the needs of the Academy and key stakeholder groups.
